Trump In Serious Trouble? Tough Atlanta DA Vying To Lock Him Up

Fani Willis

Former President Donald Trump is currently seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 election but his campaign has been off to a rough start, to say the very least. In yet another potential roadblock obstructing his path towards a second Presidency, Trump is in hot water for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 "election" results in Georgia. Fani Willis, the same hard-nosed Fulton County District Attorney who recently rounded up Young Thug and company on RICO charges, is leading the push to potentially put the former President behind bars. In early 2022, she cobbled together a special grand jury to review the roles of Donald Trump and his allies in overturning election results in the state. For the past year, the special jury has been investigating Trump and his associates and they recently submitted their findings to Willis for review.

The first primary topic of their investigation was Trump’s phone call to Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Secretary of State. In January 2021, Trump called Raffensperger and asked him to “find 11,780 votes” in his favor. Raffensperger recorded the phone call and it is currently being used as evidence against Trump. A second primary topic of scrutiny was the 16 false electors who went to the Georgia state capitol in December 2020 and “signed their names to documents that claimed they were ‘duly elected and qualified electors’ from their state.” Of course, they were not duly elected or qualified, which means that their actions may have violated Georgia state laws. And if they did break the law, the ultimate responsibility for their actions would point towards Donald Trump. Beyond those two primary issues, the special grand jury overseen by Fani Willis reviewed other potential serious charges against Donald Trump that include “criminal solicitation to commit election fraud, intentional interference with the performance of election duties, conspiracy and racketeering.”

Donald Trump has triumphed over all kinds of “witch hunts” over the past 7 years but this one may have more teeth than previous attempts to take him down. Later this month, Fani Willis will decide whether or not to move forward with the investigation and convene a regular grand jury to formally charge the embattled former President. In other words, Trump’s future in politics hinges on the decisions of one woman. For some strange reason, I get the feeling that Fani Willis is not a big fan of Donald Trump. Hopefully, she will be even-handed in her review and cast her political leanings aside for the sake of proper jurisprudence. If Donald Trump is found to be criminally liable for his post-2020 election actions in Georgia, it would be the first time in American history that a former Head of State is formally charged with a crime.
