U.S. Protests and Riots Arc: Part I, Section II

Americans let a virus scare them into emboldening the police to enforce petty laws. Now look at where we are.

Patently absurd arrests and confrontations between civilians and police over the coronavirus have been taking place since the lockdowns began

Here are Some Examples:

A clip from a viral video shared on Facebook on April 10, 2020. (Facebook)

In early April, four Philadelphia police officers were filmed forcibly dragging a man off of a city bus because he refused to wear a mask. The video went viral on the Internet and many people were indignant and upset about what they were observing. When I saw the video, I posted it to Instagram but I was not taken aback by it. Instead, it reinforced what I had already predicted would happen once the police started enforcing petty pandemic rules. The four officers looked like complete morons, ganging up on one defenseless guy who was just riding the bus as if the man were Joaquín Guzmán or something. The incident was so patently outrageous that the Philadelphia Transit Authority later reversed its policy mandating face coverings for riders.

On April 5th, in Brighton, Colorado, a father took his 6-year-old daughter to play catch in a mostly empty park. He was soon handcuffed by police officers who claimed that the park was closed due to the coronavirus. The officers eventually let him go, but this is one of many examples of the government using public health as an excuse to arrest a law-abiding citizen just to prove a point. Ironically, the arresting officers were the ones who were violating the pandemic guidelines since they were not wearing masks or any other items that would ostensibly reduce the chance of infecting others. The Brighton Police Department later said that they were “deeply sorry” for clearly overstepping its boundaries. Hopefully, they will always be sorry for possibly traumatizing a young child who saw her father get placed in handcuffs for no good reason.

On May 2nd, police in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn attempted to break up a group of people standing on the street corner because they were violating social distancing guidelines. Unfortunately, the situation went downhill very quickly. While a number of officers were busy roughing up and arresting one man, another officer ended up punching a man who appeared to run up from behind him. The punch apparently knocked the man out cold since he hit the floor right after the officer’s closed fist made contact with his face. He remained motionless while the officer placed handcuffs on him. On the very same day, another social distancing fiasco took place in Manhattan’s East Village. Plainclothes officers ended up getting into a hostile situation with civilians after they were apparently approached for not observing proper social distancing. One officer ended up getting into a violent confrontation with a bystander. The irate officer proceeded to tackle the man and pummeled him while he was on the ground. The bystander then got arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. None of that foolishness would have happened if the people were left alone.

These aforementioned instances of overzealous policing perfectly illustrate why I cannot believe that the people have been so subservient to begin with. Since March, they have allowed the government to send police officers to neighborhoods across the country to enforce laws that are questionable and possibly unconstitutional. Those same people then criticize patriots who want to exercise their 2nd amendment rights and preserve their liberties and proceed to whine and complain when the government tamps down civil unrest with the the police and heavy artillery! It is totally hypocritical and disgraceful. That is why I believe in the right to bear arms. Even though I personally do not have firearms, I believe in every citizen’s right to carry legal arms if they so choose. Why should a government that regularly oversteps its boundaries violates people’s rights be allowed to possess all the armaments and all the heavy weaponry while law-abiding citizens are left defenseless and at their mercy? Even though I personally do not have firearms, I am seriously considering getting a license at some point in the future, especially if American society keeps on devolving. When riots are happening and mobs of lawless savages are robbing, looting, and assaulting people at random how are honorable citizens supposed to protect themselves?
